A photo series looking at the ubiquitous Malayalee nurse.

Bengaluru-based artist Anup Mathew Thomas’ series Nurses looks at the ubiquitous Malayali nurse, the largest group of professional female migrants from the state of Kerala.

A story of enterprise and empowerment, and including participants situated across the globe, Thomas won the Abraaj Group Art Prize 2014 for this ambitious endeavour which includes portraits of 48 women of Keralan origin, working across 17 countries. Shot against their current local landscape, so different to that of Kerala, and in their uniforms, the resulting series is a snapshot of contemporary migratory patterns, and of nursing across the world.
